Music videos and music in general has so much to talk about. When I listen to this song and watch the video I wonder who else is watching it. I would listen to this song because It has a good beat or lyrics and I like music, while others may be listening because they just went through a hard breakup or had someone cheat on them and try to apologize. Needless to say, music can reach many audiences. Timberland as an artist reaches many audiences. The video itself is filled with pathos. From the girl dripping black tears onto the letter in the beginning to the flowers opening and blooming. The contrast of the black tears with different white backgrounds is conflicting to me–is he trying to show confusion or death and life, heaven and hell? Maybe he is showing that in the beginning there was some hope for recovery and at the end, all hope is lost. Everything is dying, catching fire and shattering–there is no more hope, there is no more relationship, no more life. What was his true intent in this song? Had he himself gone through a rough relationship or was it just to sell money?
Let me show you a remix:
This version has more of a story behind it and is so different from the original. The original could be about anything, but most likely a relationship while this is about a little girl who sees her family fall apart. They also will appeal to different audiences due to the rap music is the second, while the first was more relaxing. Like I said before, music can change audiences quickly and its meaning. It all depends on what you want out of the song.
I’m a huge fan of this song, not because i necessarily relate to any particular part of it but solely because i like the beat and i find the lyrics to be compelling. This song represents a clear message– its too late to apologize, there is no possible forgiveness. However, this message can mean such different things when played to different audiences. An individual often interprets a particular song by comparing the lyrics to past experiences. Those who just experienced a tough break up can relate this song to the feeling that’s they felt when their relationship ended; however, this song also can apply to other ares where forgiveness can not be accepted. This song displays the message that there is only so much hurt that can be experienced by an individual until finally that person will no longer accept an apology. This song can actually be related to a variety of different instances, no only break ups. The music video clearly displays a guy that has finally had enough and will no longer take the girl who continues to hurt him back. There are many romantic objects in the video, such as love letters and heart symbols that are displayed in ways that are far from romantic showing the audience that this guy means business, and it really is too late for his ex to apologize.
When this song was first produced I enjoyed it a lot. Everything about the song made me feel happy at the time. Once my girlfriend had broken up with me I could no longer listen to this song. This kept bringing back memories of us and it would just make me more and more depressed. I wished maybe this song would have come out at a different part of the year , but you know thats life. I haven’t listened to this song in quite some time, and I were to hear it again it would make me start to feel really really sad . As I think more and more about the song; it makes me understand that there has been too much damage for repair. I liked the song and would still listen to it if it wouldn’t bring flashbacks too me.
I think the hidden thing here that Pete and Kylie bring up, but don’t realize, is how there is such a difference in how people of different ages use the internet. The original version of this song was the first song I downloaded when I got the Macbook I currently use. iTunes tells me that I purchased the song on 12/7/07, almost two years ago. And while my dad was probably paying taxes on April 15th, 2007, I downloaded the remix that Kylie posted above, or so says iTunes. I don’t know if it’s because I spend a lot of time listening to music, it is a hobby of mine, or maybe it’s just the music of my generation. For all I know, my dad probably heard the Rolling Stones years before his parents did, so maybe the internet is just a new medium for the same type of communication.
This song was fire when it was released a few years ago and it really changed the style of music to come. Having Timbaland produce anything means at least a gold album to come, platinum in most cases. The song does really suck to hear for a lot of people who have been through a bad break up. The song has changed over time and has been remixed for a good reason not because of our age but because it was a great song and many other artists realized this and wanted to put their own spin on this song. It does seem like it is an age difference but in actuality it is a societal change that has occurred, much like when this song first came out, it changed the face of music forever. The internet like mac says is some sort of communication, WRONG, it definitely is and think of how it has revolutionized everything in our lives. A 6 month span from release to remix is actually quite a long time for a song to be remixed but it was deemed appropriate by lil wayne and other artists because well this was during the time when weezy released over 3,000 songs in one year do the math music was being spit out by him freestyle and selling songs at a rate of a little over 8 songs a day! thats what the internet has done has well it has made communication easily acceptable worldwide and cheap and in most cases free. this new age of communication takes us to new heights and can really unlock doors like it has for the music industry.
